I'm Jeremy Murray and I'm almost nine years old. My sister Lily is four. We live with our Grandma and Grandpa in a housecar. That's the name my sister gave it. She means it's a house on wheels. It's really an RV and we travel from place to place in it.

We spent Christmas and the winter on the beach in south Texas. I wanted to stay there. But Grandpa was ready to move on.

This time we're headed for a wildlife refuge in Oklahoma. Grandpa says we'll see buffalo and longhorn cattle there. Not like in a zoo, but out in the wild.

I'm not afraid anymore that Grandpa is going to forget and leave us behind when he stops to buy gas. And I'm sure Grandma isn't going to forget about making us do school each day. You see, our grandparents are kind of weird.

Grandma wants us to learn more about the real Easter by seeing the play they're doing down in the mountains at the refuge. As far as Lily is concerned, colored eggs and chocolate bunnies are the 'real' Easter.

And as for me--well, I have one friend. He's a dog named Mose. But I wouldn't mind having a friend who was a boy my own age.

People who have ties to the UP are called "Yoopers" and this book celebrates the proud Yoopers and their proud hunting experiences. The book tells how many UP residents came to our country and to this remote location from eastern Europe. The author talks about the timber industry and its importance to developing the UP and supplying jobs to its residents. The book also talks about challenges to retaining the UP culture because young Yoopers leave, going to other areas of the country as they search for better jobs and careers. For the hardcore hunter, there are stories about whether we should use bait for deer, how we will live with wolves, how we track wounded deer, which deer we should shoot, and how we control buck fever. There are chapters about ruff grouse, sharptails, geese, ducks, and those frequently howling UP coyotes. For youngers, there are tales of pursuing frogs and chipmunks, as the training ground for bigger game to follow. And there are stories about favorite guns, bows, arrows, and a very special three-legged bird dog. There are also stories about four generations of one family hunting together out of the same deer camp and all four hunters getting a deer. Kurt Minnifield is a fledgling actor playing a zombie in a low budget horror movie. The director and crew decide to move their shooting to lovely and isolated Watkins State Park...only they don't get proper permission.

Victor Newsome is a thirteen year old trying to both shed his nerdy image and learn outdoor skills at a special survival camp. After teaching the boys how to make shelter and kill their own food, the counselors decide to take a day trip to the neighboring state park--Watkins.

A series of ethical lapses, poor decisions, and bad luck lead to a colossal misunderstanding. Violence erupts as both sides fight desperately against a dangerous set of foes. Who will be more savage--the literal "monsters," or the boys equipped with deadly weapons, and the knowledge of how to use them?
