Island Boyhood: A Memoir (Kindle Edition)

Island Boyhood: A Memoir
Island Boyhood: A Memoir (Kindle Edition)
By Jim Vosper

Buy new: $0.99

First tagged by Jon Olson "Jon Olson"
Customer tags: camping, action adventure

Review & Description

Jim Vosper was born in 1920. He and his parents, ravaged by The Depression, were forced to move to a cottage on Bois Blanc Island in the Straits of Mackinac. They lived there year-round from 1929 to 1936, leading a nearly pioneer existence – hunting, fishing, and storing necessities for the long, hard winters.

The Vospers engaged in such forgotten practices as cutting massive blocks of ice from Lake Huron, moving them to shore, and packing them in sawdust to refrigerate perishables through the summer; opening snowed-in roads from homestead to homestead to relieve the winter isolation; and hunting deer and rabbits to keep food on the table. The book recounts dramatic survival tales of life on the water, and sketches the interesting people that lingered on and visited the island from its logging heyday to midcentury. In addition to year-round residents seeking refuge like the Vospers, the island was the summer escape for automotive titans such as the Briggs and Fisher families, among others.

Illustrated with historic photographs.

Betrovia: The first of three of the series Land of Betrovia (Paperback)

Betrovia: The first of three of the series Land of Betrovia
Betrovia: The first of three of the series Land of Betrovia (Paperback)
By Dave King

Review & Description

What can a man expect from his Creator after losing his wife to a long, debilitating illness, then agonizing over raising two daughters on his own and struggling to help his disabled-veteran younger brother defeat bitterness and hatred? Being challenged to pursue a new career path, not once, not twice but three times early in his adult life can also create anxiety about the future. And then there's the political, religious and economic upheavals of the region in which he resides which add even more gray hairs to his nearly-white head of hair. Patrik Veillein as a newly-married young man (and with dutiful but recalcitrant wife in tow) turns away from the comforts of small town life to help his uncle manage a road-side inn many miles away. And before he gets a handle on that new job, before he can learn all there is to run a roadside inn, the uncle suddenly dies. If he had stayed where he was born, in the village where he was well-liked and well-adjusted, he could have become a successful hunter, fur trapper, and quite possibly a successful artist (which would have been just fine with his mother). Moving to the Lonely Fox Inn meant leaving everything that was comfortable, predictable and even rational. Managing the Lonely Fox Inn meant meeting boisterous traveling salesmen, surly soldiers, mean-spirited mercenaries, and even an adventurer harboring a deep, dark secret. But, it also meant facing disappointment, disillusionment and even disaster. Read more

Noirot's Call of the Moose: The Biography of Clark Noirot (Paperback)

Noirot's Call of the Moose: The Biography of Clark Noirot
Noirot's Call of the Moose: The Biography of Clark Noirot (Paperback)
By Kitty Noirot

Review & Description

TO VIEW NATURE'S MAGNIFICENT BOUNTY, YOU ONLY NEED ONE THING- ADVENTURE. BE BOLD, BUT CAUTIOUS AS WELL. CLARK ALWAYS MADE THE BEST OF A SITUATION BY CALMLY AND STRATEGICALLY PLANNING HOW TO ENSURE THAT HE HAD AN EXCELLENT TRIP.

"This book is clearly a window into Clark Noirot's life as an avid outdoorsman! The details and the flavor of his adventures, from childhood, to military service, to more current times, are described here in such a way, it felt like I was there with him. Experience life from an earlier time in America's history through Noirot's eyes and words. This is truly an enjoyable book to read for this fisherman/hunter!"
-Mark T. Masicampo; Oceano, California

"The literary style of Kitty's book brings alive a simpler time in life ... a good read for anyone that is an avid sportsman. She has captured her father's life from childhood through his adulthood in a very picturesque style. Her words give a vivid accounting of the places that Clark has lived and hunted. A real treasure of a book!"
-Patsy Tobias, avid reader

Born on a farm near Sparr, Michigan, in 1928, Clark Noirot always had a deep love for the great outdoors. As a child, he loved to fish and hunt, bagging his first rabbit at an early age. But it was the urge to fly a plane that culminated in his becoming a bush pilot, a profession that took him to some of the most beautiful places in North America.

Noirot's Call of the Moose is an extraordinary story of one man's lifelong love affair with nature from early childhood through the golden years of retirement. Filled with amusing anecdotes, snippets of nostalgia, and a good deal of wit, Noirot's charming stories reveal how he created a career out of being an outdoorsman. Colorful characters infuse Noirot's tale, and breathtaking descriptions of wildlife and of the Canadian wilderness create a magnificent backdrop.

From majestic moose and killer bugs to freezing nights and close encounters, Noirot paints a rich portrait of his life as a hunter, fisherman, conservationist, pilot, moose caller, and, above all, survivor.

Enjoy the experience of the Canadian wilderness as Noirot drinks from natural bubbling brooks, hunts, fishes, and relishes the clean, cool fresh air. Noirot's Call of the Moose satisfies the nature lover in us all.
